First customer


As a manager, you might be responsible for building a product or delivering a service. That’s the immediate purpose of what you do in a day-to-day sense.

But more profoundly, your real product, the thing you’re ultimately responsible for, is your department, your team.

And … with some irony … you are also the first customer of that team.

Build a highly motivated highly functioning team – you’ll benefit from the value they add. Your end users will be happy and they’ll ask you to do more, and more interesting stuff. It’s a path to growth and personal development.

Build a demotivated, abstracted, dysfunctional team – you’ll suffer from their lack of bite. Your end users will be as miserable as you and your staff, and you’ll all turn your backs to find something better to do with your time and money.
