It might work out. Probably will most times. Often enough to convince yourself that it was ok to let yourself be sucked into that meeting, and even if you did spend too long on that unrelated detail, it didn’t affect the outcome of this bigger thing. At all. Really.
What if you nailed it? If you turned up fully prepared, in command of the facts and the arguments. If you’d thought things through. If the things you say aren’t off the cuff, but considered, evolved, connected, compelling.
