Are you winning?

Are you winning?

Are you winning?

Take a moment …

Think about it …

Right now.

It’s a question guaranteed to get the juices running.

It forces you to define what you’re working on, how much progress you’re making and whether you are in fact winning or just keeping time.

I ask you, it stops you and makes you think. Ask any member of your team, same result. Rarely will you get an unequivocal, “Yes,” with a fist pump. More often: a look to the distance and, “That depends …” or, “Winning at what?” Whatever the response, it’s an opener for an important conversation.

Five minutes

Doesn’t matter who you ask – production worker, Account Manager, COO or the Finance Director – you’ll discover something you didn’t know about the person, the project they’re working on and the barriers and challenges they’re facing. And a special bonus … how they think.

We all benefit from a little attention and time to reflect on the bigger picture. Five minutes is all it takes. You share, learn from the exchange, and gain a clearer idea of how they’re doing and where they fit into the grand scheme of things.

Everyone’s busy. It easy to put your head down, work hard, and lose sight of direction or progress. “Are you winning?” is a short cut to the main line. A few minutes to take stock, look towards the horizon, and check the map.

So … are you winning?

Skippy Strategy: Next person you see, ask ‘em. A few days later, someone you haven’t seen for a while, ask them. Not everyone, not all the time.
