About the fact
Every now and again there’s bad news, and despite your best endeavours, it’s the kind that impacts others. You did everything you could to prevent it going bad, and everything else to minimise the skittle-effects to the point where they’re as small as can be, but you know they will be sharp.
Tell them.
If you can’t do what you said you were going to do, give them as much chance and time as possible to do the things that they have to do to deal with the issues. Tell them about the fact, about the mitigating actions, about what you did and what you’re doing, about the contingencies you have in place … and … tell them about the impact. That’s not the end of it, do what you can to bring it home, salvage what you can and learn the lessons that are to be learned.
Skippy strategy: Tell them.
