Like shoes

People are like shoes.
Stretch us and we’ll get wider, but we’ll never get any longer.
We can be encouraged given confidence, taught new skills, shown space in which to grow. Put us under pressure and we’ll bulge: sometimes in good places as we take on new responsibilities, sometimes in bad places as the pressure makes us crack. We can do things tomorrow we can’t imagine today – but only within the bounds of possibility.
Not everything is.
We can never do what we just can’t do. No matter how hard we try, we can’t grow or stretch or adjust or accommodate in directions that cannot be possible.
What’s possible? Three limiting factors.
Physical – what we were born with. Our parents just so tall.
Attitude – what we bring to the party every day. The desire to get wider.
Action – what we do about it.
Skippy strategy: Stre-e-e-e-tch.
