Time inside

For absolutely sure, you spend a lot (a lot) of time inside your organisation. Whether on your own with email, or buried in meetings, it’s a fair guess that you put most of your time into things that happen on the inside. Which is great for operational awareness, and might even be the fastest way to push things along, but it’s not so good for actual results.
That’s not to say that internal achievements aren’t important. Every process tweaked, person aligned and asset arranged into a neat row – all is good for the world.
But the things that matter happen outside your organisation. They’re about contribution to a greater whole. Whether for internal stakeholder or external customer, the rubber hits the road when other people – who you don’t pay – do their thing with your thing.
That’s where you find your greatest contribution.
