Before you work together

Bringing someone new onto the team always involves hope and risk. You hope they can do what they say they can do and what you think they can do, and you put short term progress and team dynamics on the line.
If you can, when you can, try to make it so you can … work with them before you work with them. Bring them to the table for something smallish and discreetish that gives everyone a view of how they work and the work they do. Get your hands dirty working side by side on a project together, walk with them to the coffee shop together, take a road-trip to an offsite meeting together – encourage others on your team to form a non-interview based opinion.
Then ask your collective gut, are they one of us, do they add a value we want?
Skippy strategy: Work together before you work together.
