Fitting pigeons

Ideally (idealistically), the place you start is with the roles you need. You put the people you have into the roles they fit – where they can contribute the most – and look to find the other roles with other people. If someone doesn’t fit, they won’t have a place on the team.
In reality, you start with the roles you need and you put the people you have into the roles they fit best, and then look for others who fit best into the other roles too.
One way of looking at it, it’s always a compromise. Another way of looking, good people have ways of adding more value and in more ways than you can plan for, and your job has no resemblance to fitting pigeons into pigeon holes.
Skippy strategy: Start with an assumption that good people will find a way, and deal with things when they don’t.
