How deep?
At the beginning, everything seems pretty clear … I need to know how much it will cost to do that thing.
First thing to agree is the scope – the corners and edges of the need … like the dimensions of the problem and the timescale involved: a block of granite, six feet square by Wednesday.
And, if a job’s worth doing it’s worth doing well. Okey dokey. Define “well”?
Do you need a quick pass-over that identifies the ball park and a few of the players? Or detailed blueprints with schematics and services, a route map to get you there, full biographies and a play-book for what might happen next?
In other words, how deep is the dive?
Quick, detailed, sales-y, technical, strategic, tactical?
Each needs to appreciate the others – but what exactly are you after?
Skippy strategy: Don’t forget to define the “how-deep” along with the “what”.
