The roles you need
Every now and again, maybe not yearly (although maybe), but whenever and as soon as you scratch your head, go through the discipline of working out what roles you need in your team. That’s roles, not people. Of course, you’ll end up fitting the people to the roles, or most of them anyway, but it’s important to first work out what roles you need to do the things you know you want to do – what roles will deliver the strategy.
Because things change. Because people change. Because the requirements we had when we built the team we have now were probably out of date before we got the people we have in the team now.
And then ask … which is the right person for each role?
And then you can move things around. You can right size. You can hire for tomorrow.
