Look up at the end of the day and it’s likely you’ve spent most of your time fighting one kind of fire or another. Customer priorities, bureaucratic necessities, personnel imperatives. Whatever you’ve been doing, it was probably the kind of things you have no choice but to do. One thing and then another thing and then another thing … and none of them big things or things you’d put on any other list than things to do.
You’re too busy serving everything else to spend any time serving the next big thing.
The only way to do it, the only way, is to carve out regular time – away from the day-to-day niceties that use the ticking clock – to work on the things you know you need to work on, the discretionary things, that have no impact today but will change your world tomorrow.
