It doesn’t move it forward
As much as we’d love it, we don’t always manage to follow through on our commitments.
Things get delayed, people let you down, it isn’t as easy…
Dealing with the day-to-day is a nimble footed affair. Tip-toeing around obstacles, jumping between stepping-stones, taking care not to crush initiative or subvert progress. As you navigate, it’s natural and necessary to look where you tread. To pay attention. To focus on the immediate imperative.
If your intention is to do any kind of a decent job today and set up another decent job tomorrow, it’s not even a choice. That’s what makes the turbine go around.
But it doesn’t move things forward.
What about the day after tomorrow?
Make sure some of what you do today is also in service of a longer term goal. Remember that goal, remind yourself and your team of that goal, every day.
In every meeting, give the context of today. Every short-term win should push towards where you know you want to go.
