Bolting horses

At the start of every project some action-oriented person questions how much preparation is necessary before the actions starts. Too much? Enthusiasm turns to cynicism and those action-oriented types get busy on other projects. Too little? You’re setting yourself up for chasing bolting horses.
So how much? The answer, of course, is … enough.
Enough to give you the confidence that these people have the ability to head off in the right direction and deal with all the things they can reasonably be expected to encounter.
Which puts the primary focus on ”these people”. Do they have the chops, can they be trusted (in every sense) Are they motivated? Can they, do they, work as a team? Will they work things out or pursue things blindly?
With new teams, be a skeptic – more prep.
With proven teams, be a leader – get on with it.
