Improve your shot

With the work in sensible and obvious chunks, with each new person knowing exactly where and how they fit and armed with a firm understanding of what you expect of them … how to improve your shot of getting them at their best?
Ask them.
The alternative? Try to work it out on your own. Try one way of working with them, try another way, give them close direction, leave them to their own devices, give them broad objectives, micromanage them. Try every angle you can think of or that you have time for and work out which one works best. And trust to luck you got it “right”.
Or, ask them.
Ask them at the beginning of their tenure, ask them after a month, ask them when they’re struggling, ask them when their skipping. Is there’s anything you can do to help?
Skippy strategy: Ask them … how can you help?
