The volunteers

If you’ve had your team for any length of time you’ve noticed some splits aren’t nuanced.
Some people are the kind you always want to have around. They’re diligent, have a work ethic, get along with people, do what they say they’re going to do and do it to a creditable standard. They add energy to the room. They’re obvious keepers.
Some aren’t.
They suck the energy, they see and relish the downside in everyone else’s ideas, they find difficulty and complexity, they focus in the wrong places and pull attention away from the right places. They have a knack for disappearing when the going gets tough and there’s always a reason why the thing they’re doing would be so much better if only for this, or that, or the other thing. Let’s call them volunteers.
If your team looks like that, deal with the volunteers.
