You’re a politician

If you make decisions based on what you want to be true rather than the reality in front of you, you’re a politician. Like when you fund the project because you don’t want to say no to the person behind it. Like when you keep that that disruptive person, who creates ill will and toxic relationships, on staff because of something they did in the past or something you’d like them to do – whether they have the chops or not – in the future. Like when you keep saying yes to the customer even as they drive you down a slippery slope to a dead-end product and a bullying relationship.
You can go a long way and for a long time as a small-p politician. The job though, is leadership, and leadership is more about dealing with reality than tap-dancing around the fantasy.
Skippy strategy: Leadership is not the same as politics.
