Marketing truly is too important to be left to the marketing department because marketing is really everything you say and everything you do. It’s not just that you shouldn’t outsource something so important, it’s that it’s impossible to outsource anyway.
Sure, someone can do marketing-y things. Absolutely, those things can be bolted on without impacting what’s going on inside. And it’s true, there will always be actions that have to be taken that push your desired messages out to your desired audiences. Which means there’s a place for someone with specific types of marketing activities in their job description.
But your team, your marketing team, is everybody.
Which means, at the very least, involve yourself with marketing the discipline, accept that everything you do as an organisation IS your marketing, and that all those things count, not just the website.
