The conditions

The work of the manager certainly involves doing technical things; the work only they can do to put Tab A into Slot B. But while that may occupy a manager’s time, it’s not management. It’s effort.
The work of managing involves organising and enabling people to do and achieve things together.
Not in the moment, not over the shoulder, not micro do-this and micro do-that – that’s using tools, that’s one-on-one, non-leverage. That’s unproductive use of a manager’s time. That actively sucks energy and creativity out of the room – which may be what you want. But that’s administration, not management.
The most effective managers, the most effective leaders if you prefer that word, create the conditions in which teams can do the things the teams are committed to doing – with the least amount of administration-management as possible.
