Thrash less

There’s a lot to be said for getting on with it. For placing one foot in front of the other and making daily progress. Not out-thinking yourself. Just getting on with it. And when that’s said about simple projects with few moving parts and only a few people, it probably works well.

With complex projects, with lots of unknowns and where many people have to pull together to get anywhere interesting it’s a recipe for delay, confusion, frustration, cul de sacs, and, when progress stalls … expensive weeks or months thrashing about whilst the whole team stomps around looking for the path.

So find that path first. Start with the inevitable thrashing.

Make no actual steps other than gathering your sources, throwing them in a room with your team, and making best guesses on the moving parts and how they’ll fit.
