The difference
The reason you should reward great behaviours and performance, the reason you should call out poor behaviours and lack of progress, the reason you should give any kind of feedback is the same – to let them know you can tell the difference.
If you don’t shine a light on whatever’s good in your world, those providing the light will think you didn’t notice or don’t care, and they’re extremely likely not to try so hard next time.
If you don’t hold a mirror to whatever is bad in your world, the people involved (and the people who see the people involved) will think you didn’t notice or don’t care, and they’re extremely likely to keep moving in a straight line (until, eventually, they’re acted upon by an external influence).
The best time to shine a light or hold a mirror? Immediately you notice.
