Doing in a new way something that’s always been done in other ways means you’re either kinda-sorta critical of the old way, or you’re flat-out in-your-face…
We don’t need update meetings. We don’t need to know what you did yesterday or last week. There’s no immediate benefit to a blow-by-blow as you recount who said what to whom. To put in bluntly, nobody cares about your personal history. It might be interesting as a distraction, it might even make us laugh or cry, but there’s no leverage in past-tense minutiae.
What we do care about … blockers, lessons learned, decisions we need to make, the fact of progress and the lack of it – information we can use to coordinate clocks, reassign resources, focus attention, change direction and set hares running. What we care about are the actionable morsels. What we care about really is how your efforts will affect and change the efforts of others.
What do we need to talk about? … how today affects everyone else’s tomorrow.
