It’s the myth of leadership that people will go where you want and accept the challenges on the way. It’s the myth of management that you can make people to do what you want and in the way you want it.

They have to want it.

You can motivate, a bit. You can inspire, a bit. You can measure and hold accountable, and that helps a bit. You can do an amazing job, and that’s a plus. But in the end, they have to want it.

And if they don’t … two choices.

Find a different path (that you’re willing to walk with them). Find a different team (that are willing to walk with you).

Neither a recipe for easy answers, both smarter than bashing incompatibilities into each other.

You know it, they know it. You have to want it.

Skippy strategy: Work with what you’ve got, or find some new material.
