Boat ride
A few months later, after the newbie has walked the halls for a while and everyone is getting used to what they do and how they do it, it’s time for reflection. Chances are, they are not exactly what you thought. Chances are, the role is not exactly as described. Chances are, some tweaking around responsibilities and expectations would make the fit a little more fitting.
In other words, hit reset based on the person you have rather than the fantasy you imagined.
Take a wide angle view of where they sit in the team, their connections, their skills as part of the greater whole. Take a narrow view of the contribution they’ve made, the relationships they’ve forged, the pinch points they’ve struggled through.
Assuming they’ve got a long-term ticket for the boat, spend time now to reposition where they sit.
Skippy strategy: After three months, look again at the seating plan.
