When your team complains about poor communications and being out of the loop – and at some point, every team complains about poor communications and being out of the loop – they always have a point. No matter where you sit in the hierarchy, there are things going on, things being discussed, changed coming into play, that you miss and that can blind side you. In the board room, you struggle to get clear communications from the field, in the field, you have no idea what’s being discussed in the corridors. And every now and again … when did that happen?
Accepting that communications can always be improved isn’t an excuse to give yourself a break. Make it your job to slow down, ask questions of their world and explain what’s going on in yours.
Poor communications should never be because of lack of trying.
