Finding great people and bringing them into your team is both one of the most productive moves you can make as a manager and one of the greatest feelings. There was before, and now there’s after – with more potential and more opportunity and more ability to do great work.

Sometimes, sure, they find you. Sometimes, when you least expect it, they break through your let me get on with it shell. But in general, you find great people when you’re looking for great people. You tune in. Whether interviewing, buying coffee or bumping into fellow travellers on the way in and out of daily life.

Which means holding a high bar. It means being prepared to wait. It means going down every avenue and using every contact until you find what you’re after. And what you’re really after? Most times … attitude, smarts, curiosity.
